BRIEF HISTORY OF REUBEN'S RUN
Reuban Edwin Williams, was born in Cornwall in 1834 and married Susanna Maria Watts born 1850 and came to Australia and took up mining in Ballarat and Bethanga before selecting land on Johnston Creek, Talgarno. The land was originally Station Cattle Yards where stock from the Upper Murray was held overnight on the way to the sale yards at Wodonga. He then turned some of the land into a garden where he grew magnificent vegetables.
There was an abundance of thistles in this area and when he built his home of pise (mud and straw) with the help of his family, he named it "Thistle Camp" by which it is still known as today. The mud was sourced from Johnston Creek.
Reuben died on 25th December, 1901. Susannah was killed coming home from Albury in a horse and cart driven by their son Samuel within sight of "Thistle Camp".
The land was then farmed by Reuben's son Samuel Arthur Williams and his wife Jessie, then Alice Irene Trewella and husband Norm, then Cecily Joy McKenzie-McHarg and her husband John. In all 6 generations of the one family. Property video available email request to [email protected]
