House description

“C1852 Lieutenant DuCane's Residence - SOLD BY HEIDI McATEE - 0406 321 770”

SOLD BY HEIDI McATEE - 0406 321 770

Built in the day when deals were sealed with a handshake, when the tapestry of life consisted of horse and cart, layered dresses, Victorian and cloche hats, this splendorous 1852 character homestead, still very much entwined in its bygone era and combined with various modifications and additions throughout the generations has now come to market for a new custodian for the first time in many years.

Spanning a rare and significant 1700 square metres of land (yes, 1700 sqm!) which is close to the old half acre, or one rood, twenty-seven and two-tenths perches or thereabouts.

Steep in history this residence showcases elaborate detail from its era and is entrusted as a rare example forming a significant part of the remnant building stock that is the fabric of Guildford's historic town. The original craftsmanship was constructed by convicts under supervision by royal engineer, Lieutenant Edmund Du Crane in 1852. The house was built with the front facing the hills and the kitchen and rear facing Meadow Street. The original double roof of shingle has since been replaced and the original interior and exterior walls are mostly three (3) courses of brick.

Sir Hector Cornthwaite Rason later lived in the house. He was MP for a number of years, Minister for Justice and the seventh Premier for Western Australia. His son Ernest Hector was a returned Guildford Anzac.

Lt. Du Cane wrote to his mother in April 1852 "I am building myself a house consisting of two rooms, a big office, a kitchen and servant room, stable and garden. It faces from the road, looking up the Helena Valley to a distant glimpse of the Darling Hills".

This fine home has expanded over the years to feature 4 bedrooms (one adjoining another) plus two bathrooms, a massive family living room with fireplace, large office or second living, large formal dining with fireplace, a separate studio/store outdoors, outdoor pool & pool house, double undercover parking, garage and workshop/shed (formerly original stables).

Historic Features Include:

• wide verandahs
• impressive leadlight in entry and hallway
• gracious formal lounge/sitting room with fireplace and views to gardens and pool
• formal dining
• high ornate ceilings
• wide nine inch (9") polished floorboards
• ornate Panelled doorways
• original detached stables (utilised as garage)

1900's Renovations include, but are not limited to:

• jarrah and leadlight study
• spacious and well-appointed kitchen with ample storage, breakfast bar and dishwasher
• 3 additional bedrooms (main bedroom includes leadlight, WIR and Ensuite)
• second bathroom
• swimming pool, pool house
• solar hot water system
• working bore

Nestled in the prime heart of Guildford among many period homes and buildings including neighbouring Garrick Theatre (C1853) which was also designed and constructed as part of the Guildford Convict Depot by Lt. Du Cane (Lt. Du Cane designed and supervised the construction of most of the buildings associated with the convict depot in Guildford, as well as building the first bridge over the Swan River at Guildford at the site of the public wharf in Meadow Street). The Garrick Theatre still operates today and is the oldest and continual running community theatre group in metropolitan Western Australia.
