What's around Aldinga Road

House description

“Sold by Nick Van Vliet & John Lewis”

Another huge auction result, call us for property advice.

Here's your chance to own one of Willunga's iconic buildings, with a rich history, incredible charm and character, still retaining lots of original features. Set on 1010sqm of flat land in the heart of the Township.

Impressive stonework, pug and daub walled outbuilding, slate and Baltic pine floors, lofty matchboard and pressed metal ceilings, some original cabinetry, skirtings and architraves, 4 open fires and the most amazing cellar make this place well worth restoring.

What we love about the property:
Downstairs:
- Welcoming verandah and slate flagstones with 2 front doors. One opens to a large living/dining room, part of the original shop, next perhaps an open plan living/dining/kitchen, complete with open fireplace
- Another front door opens to hallway, leading to the parlour, the front room of every middle and high-class home, and for some, used exclusively to receive and entertain guests and for others, used as an environment for family intimacy. Fabulous features include the Australian red cedar window reveals, inbuilt display cabinet, mantle piece around the open fire, flanked either side by gorgeous cabinets. The pelmet and wallpaper will take you back in time
- Central room with open fireplace, with back door leading to the semi-detached kitchen area and wet areas, and stairway to the bedrooms upstairs
-Semi detached kitchen constructed from pug and daub, with large larder, slate flagstones, fire place, the most amazing blacksmith made bakers oven, with adjoining dining room
- Large cellar underneath kitchen, ideal for storing your wine collection and preserves from all the fruit trees
- Bathroom, 2 separate toilets and laundry out the back

Upstairs:
- 2 large bedrooms with north facing windows looking over the Township, with 2 more walk through rooms, suitable as either more sleeping accommodation, studies or dressing rooms, or convert to ensuite area

Outdoors:
- Welcoming front verandah, and rear verandahs for your BBQ's
- Large extra high double carport
- Several garden sheds and workshop with power and light
- Secret overgrown garden with 2 large walnut trees, citrus, mulberry and fruit tree orchard, stacks of space for your vegetable gardens and chooks

Purpose:
- Subject to council consent, ideal renovation project for home, business, or BnB. Plenty of space out the back for another home

History
This two storey stone building forms part of the original streetscape with its neighbours, numbers 17 and 19, and retains much of its original construction.
Built by 1856, it was the workshop and home of John Richards, Sr., a builder and carpenter who arrived in SA from Camelford in Cornwall in 1854. Richards and Sons were important local builders in Willunga, and built many fine buildings including the Bank of Adelaide and Methodist Church and Hall. John's wife Mary also owned and operated the general store in High Street.

John's sons all worked in the family business; William was a carpenter, Harry (Henry) a stonemason, while John Junior was one of the Willunga slate carvers, carving many of the slate headstones in the local cemeteries. Grandson George continued in the building business. Harry was Chairman of the Willunga Railway Committee which lobbied successfully for the line to be built. His widow ran Richards Refreshment Rooms and Cafe in their home on Railway Terrace.

Between 1920 and 1940 the building was known as Jacob's Corner Shop and was very conveniently situated for school children attending the Public School, just opposite on Aldinga Road. Fanny Jacobs (daughter of carpenter William Richards) and her husband Howard J Jacobs, whom she had married in 1904, lived here and ran the shop between them.
(Information sourced from Willunga now and then, and the Willunga branch of the National trust)

Not for the feint hearted, this certainly is a project that could result something quite spectacular. If you love historic buildings, have a sense of adventure, and like to live in the heart of the best town on the Fleurieu, come and check out this amazing place, you're gonna love it
