What's around Falmouth Street

Studio description

“Parish Hall: C1850”

Constructed by R.C. Foster in 1850, this beautiful sandstone/bluestone property has serviced a part of the colony history of architecture in rural Tasmania. Under Forster's ownership, the property was a storehouse the neighbouring hotel.

After Foster's death and still owned by the Foster family; the property became an entertainment centre being the only sizable meeting place in Avoca, meetings and social events. In 1937, Mr B O'Connor (landowner of nearby Benham) purchased the property and donated the building to the Anglican Church.

The address serviced as Community Hall for dances, concerts and public meetings; Sunday School for the Anglican Parish and in recent times the local post office for Avoca and nearby villages Rossarden and Royal George.
The Parish Hall/Avoca Post Office (as many known the building as) offers original timber structural beams and shingles under the galvanised iron roof on the upstairs level; restored sandstone lintels surrounding the timber windowsills.

Downstairs offers a large retail space (11.4 by 5.5m) with basic kitchenette and enclosed Saxon woodfire.
The building is set on a fully fenced 0.1518ha (0.375 acre) allotment with off-street access from Falmouth Street. This prominently located building in Avoca is zoned 'Local Business' by the Northern Midlands Council planning scheme and is classified as heritage listed by the National Trust.

Avoca is a small village and is situated on the banks of the South Esk River near the confluence of the St Pauls River. Avoca is a leisurely 50-minutes' drive from Launceston CBD and Launceston Airport and only 25 minutes' drive east from Campbell Town. This property is within walking distance of the Avoca Roadhouse/Post Office and currently renovated Union Hotel.

The community of Avoca is a very close knit group of residents who are supportive of each other and very welcoming to all new residents. Avoca and the Fingal Valley is full of 'characters' who resided and call 'the valley' home.
