House description

“Proudly Sold By Gregory Ward”

Welcome to Mons Mari - a name meaning Mountain by the Sea, a property that holds deep roots in the heart of Buderim's history. Offered to the market for the first time in over a century, this remarkable estate spans over 5,000m² of prime land and carries a legacy that helped shape the very identity of the region.

Originally part of land settled by William Pettigrew, this significant parcel of land was purchased by Joseph Foote in circa 1908, beginning a chapter of agricultural innovation and family heritage that would last for generations. The Foote family worked the land with passion and purpose - cultivating dairy cattle, bananas, pineapples, oranges, and pecans - leaving an enduring imprint on the landscape and local community.

It was on this land that the Mons Mari banana was discovered in 1908, a natural mutation named by Joseph Foote himself. This variety went on to become one of the most important commercial bananas in Australian horticulture.

In 1913, the family built the house that still proudly stands on the property today - a character-filled residence that has stood the test of time. In 1954, the home was thoughtfully converted into three separate flats, adding a new layer to its history and functionality while retaining its original charm.

But the story of Mons Mari goes beyond agriculture - it is one of honour and remembrance. When Eric Joseph Foote, Joseph's son, was tragically killed in World War I, the family commemorated his life and sacrifice by donating 17.5 hectares of adjoining land to establish the Eric Joseph Foote War Memorial Sanctuary - a tranquil nature reserve still treasured by the Buderim community today. This generous gift by his brothers Arnold and Hubert Foote in 1948 remains one of Buderim's most heartfelt tributes to those who served.

Many of the surrounding landmarks - from Foote Avenue to Foote Ridge - echo the Foote family's lasting contribution to the region, reflecting a name synonymous with Buderim's early growth and community spirit.
