This two storey urban dwelling designed as the Architects own home embraces the idea of opening, while taking advantage of views to the Perth sky-line from the upper storey and creating a private courtyard with a Northern aspect.

The garden works as a cooling oasis in summer, incorporating a gold-fish pond which helps maintain a shaded micro-climate during the summer months.

The home is an example of sound passive design principles and opens up to the northern winter sun, minimizing glazing to the eastern and western directions, whilst capturing views and breezes from the southern facade.

High level windows to the north allow for venting of hot air in summer via stack effect and cross ventilation. Ample windows allow use of natural daylight wherever possible. Sunshading elements provide interest, with reveals painted bright colours.

Recycled Mid-Century timber cabinetwork, doors, windows and flooring have also been incorporated extensively into the design, salvaged from the Architects Grandparents demolished home.

The front ironwork doors were also salvaged and re-used from this same house, and were commissioned by a local artist at the time.

Polished concrete floors downstairs provide good thermal massing and 100% natural woolen carpets were selected for use upstairs. Alloy bushed stainless steel mosaics add movement over the dining room side-board, and were made locally by the Architects friend.

Solar panels generate electricity via a grid-connected system, and a separate solar system heats water for the house.

This special home needs to be viewed to fully appreciate the design and thought that has gone into producing a contemporary home that is so easy to live in and has all the features that you would expect in a home of this calibre.
