House description

“charred timber house”

#soldbyholly $2,440,000

Charred Timber House is a robust family home, designed over three levels that follow the gentle slope of the Ainslie site. Its signature elements are the Japanese-inspired Shou Sugi Ban cladding and a recycled hardwood timber screen to the double carport, which was made from the roof battens of the original cottage. The solar passive design delivers northerly light into all living areas and bedrooms, while allowing for cross ventilation by carefully located southerly windows.
Charred Timber House is known to many. Not only recognised within the community for its beautiful and distinctive façade, and its iconic laneway mural; it is also known to many that were fortunate enough to visit during the DESIGN Canberra Festival 2019 'living rooms' event and see it recently featured in the design blog Hunting for George.
As much as a story about the home itself, the collaborative approach taken by the owners is worthy of mention. Engaging locally recognised architect Rob Henry and esteemed builder Chris Walmsley was the perfect partnership to realise their vision in building a liveable family home that connected with the surrounding landscape and community.
The outcome was threefold, with owners, architect and builder cohesively delivering an exceptional home. The opportunity to positively impact the way you live, the way you interact with the different spaces while creating a private sanctuary was more than fulfilled in the build.

The stunning charred timber cladding is a statement, which creates a sense of mystique as to what lies behind, a home that emphasises strong functional design and creative use of materials. This provides the practical requirements for living and the pleasure of enjoying light-filled, beautiful open spaces and a sense of connection with the outdoors. The planning orients all living areas and the bedrooms towards north, maximises access from living areas to front and rear gardens, and separates public and private spaces by levels.
Achieving a visually satisfying balance between the organic, free flowing gardens and the crisp, clean lines of the light interiors and dark exterior of the dwelling. Each perfectly complements the other.
Delivering on its intent to create sustainable efficiencies, the Charred Timber House achieves an EER of 7.8. It uses recycled timber, solar power, and water collection to offset energy consumption. Heat pump hydronic slab heating and the highly efficient Euro wood combustion heater combine to make the house an economical and comfortable home to escape the Canberra winter.
A mural, by Australian artist Claire Foxton, adorns the carport wall on the laneway featuring a child's face, a pop of colour and the local native flora - a respectful nod to the site's history. The mural, now an iconic image, contributes to the pride and sense of belonging for Ainslie residents and adds enormous value to the aesthetic of the urban landscape. The mural is uplifting and heart-warming for people as they head into the Mt Ainslie nature reserve beyond Duffy Street, or down to the local Ainslie Shops close by.
