“The Rose & Crown Inn circa 1825”
Set on a generous parcel of 1.695ha and built by convict labour in 1825, The Rose and Crown Inn was commissioned by Sgt Samuel Thorne to serve liquor to the settlers of the wild whaling cove of Lewisham in Van Diemans Land. The Rose and Crown Inn enjoyed a rich and colourful heyday during colonial times yet fell into disrepair until the current owners acquired the property in 2006.
A sensitive renovation and restoration process has conserved outstanding original features and convict craftsmanship, with contemporary enhancements completed to a high spec using quality fixtures and fittings, including salvaged materials sourced from other Tasmanian buildings of the era. The preservation of pit sawn floorboards and the writings and sketches on timberwork by the early occupants offer a glimpse into colonial life.
A spacious open plan living area on the entry level accommodates a kitchen, dining and family room forming the heart of the home in what was originally the Inn?s Tap Room. The warmth of the celery top joinery and reclaimed Oregon bench tops creates a cosy atmosphere and the quality appliances make cooking and entertaining a delight. French doors opening onto the sunny rear courtyard provide seamless indoor/outdoor living and ensure the main living hub is bathed in natural light.
The front reception room thought to have been the main bar when the Inn was operational, now serves as a comfortable and inviting lounge with mantel and wood fire. Up to three double bedrooms on the ground floor are serviced by a tastefully renovated bathroom with luxurious claw foot bath. The original staircase leads to the master bedroom, and two further bedrooms complete the floorplan.
A garden studio comprising lounge and bedroom with modern bathroom provides further flexible accommodation as does an adjacent out building currently configured as a games room and bar area. A workshop and wood and equipment storage area is a bonus for tradesman or those requiring extra space for hobbies.
Mature plantings including a large variety of fruit trees and established herb, vegetable and ornamental gardens offer a verdant frame around the home. Three paddocks are fenced for livestock and a dam acts as a water source.
Located just a leisurely stroll from the Lewisham Waterfront and boat ramp facilities, close to the amenities of Sorell and only a short 30 minute commute to the Hobart CBD, this exceptionally presented property offers a superb lifestyle in a piece of Tasmania?s convict history.
