32 St Georges Terrace, Battery Point TAS 7004

From 1890 to 1920, 32 St Georges Terrace Battery Point, Circa 1865, was formerly known as, "Miss Marion Livingstone's Private School". Many children went to this school and later moved to the Battery Point Model School located on the corner of Sandy Bay Road and Hampden Road (since demolished). Private venture schools as they came to be known provided an alternative and competing form of education to the public schools. Historically, they preceded the public schools in Tasmania as they had done in England and their origins lie in the charity schools, Sunday schools and dame schools of the eighteenth century.

The house is situated on land that was originally granted to William Sorell, who later sold his estate to William Kermode. The land was subdivided by Kermode and the allotment offered for sale. Although records indicate the property was constructed in 1865, the architectural style is late Victorian and the facade comprises two gable roof sections, one clad with weatherboards, and with multi-paned windows, the other of brick construction. There is also an off street park.

Situated in one of the finest streets in the suburb, with views of the River Derwent, this historic home requires some TLC to return it to its former glory but is loaded with potential to upgrade and improve (STCA). Features include a dramatic high ceiling in the living room and a bay window.
