Abode
Defined by simplicity and shaped by serenity, this home reflects timeless design. The architectural brief sought to bring nature, peace, and tranquillity into this Hawthorn residence. Ha Architecture’s response was extraordinary: a courtyard cut directly into the original bungalow, and the exquisite simplicity of Japanese-inspired design woven throughout the home.
The entrance immediately transports you from the metropolitan bustle into an ethereal space of clean, simple lines and visual harmony. A single skylight spills soft light over timber-lined walls concealing bedrooms flanking the entrance as you walk deeper into the home.
At the heart, a Japanese courtyard garden by Kihara Landscapes brings the stillness of Kyoto’s mountains into Hawthorn. Maple branches stretch towards the onsen, while water, timber, and shadow transform space into sanctuary.
Sliding bi-fold screens allow the home to breathe with the seasons, dissolving the boundary between inside and out. Light filters gently through timber while nature flows into every room. Each detail reflects a reverence for tradition, executed with architectural precision and clarity.
Beautiful as a cohesive, open space, the home is also remarkably versatile. Rooms, gardens, and the courtyard can be easily separated with sliding screens and doors—allowing one person to entertain while another finds stillness next door. Once closed, the double-glazed windows seal the house into a deep silence, providing a level of calm seldom found in urban life.
This is a home where heritage and modernity, East and West, city and sanctuary find harmony.
Modern amenities include Premium European appliances, heated concrete floors, hydronic heating, solar power, rainwater collection, triple-laminated leadlight windows, double glazing, discreet storage, and sculptural lighting—all seamlessly integrated to ensure comfort, efficiency and sustainability, each element honouring the past while creating a home for the future.
