It was built in 1835 by Charles Newman when he was Granted the land on receiving his Ticket-of-Leave. He was transported to Van Dieman's Land at the age of 20 for stealing a coat and an umbrella.
Charles continued his ‘adventures' here by associating with Bushrangers and was even charged with kidnapping; however, he ended up marrying the lady in question! Upon receiving his freedom, he began acquiring large areas of land and started a carting business from Hobart to Launceston with his Bullock Team.
