What's around Charles Street

House description

“THE FARMHOUSE - A TWIST OF CHARACTER & CONTEMPORARY”

Just like vintage collectables, this stunning Queenslander in the heart of central West Gladstone has style, character and a story to tell.

Situated on 1344m2 allotment shaded by well-established trees, 'the Farmhouse' Circa 1905 was originally commissioned by a pioneering family. The story goes that Charles Street was actually the creek bed which ran all the way to KFC before reaching the mangroves. West Gladstone School was where their cattle yards stood and their pig pen was actually Koolyangarra Kindy. They also used to swim in a water hole which was situated where Carron Street is now.

Using recycled and re-purposed timber of the home as well as colonial treasures sourced from Busby's in Rockhampton, the property has evolved, however the owners have gone to great lengths and expense to do so while retaining the rich history and soul of the house.

The story;

- A retired Danish carpenter pulled out and replaced the old floor boards and joists to almost all the internal living areas, secretly nailing the new ones with extra care

- The rear floor boards to the dining room were specially milled to match the size of the originals with the original hardwood boards repurposed.

- Custom hardwood kwilla floor was sourced for the kitchen/meals and entry foyer, ideal for the high traffic area. Hardwood weatherboard wraps around the exterior of the home arcing back to the original design, which had long been replaced by cement sheeting when these owners began to transform her. The house externally is now as close to the period as possible.

- The galley kitchen was decided on to make full use of the verandahs with exterior plantation shutters installed north and south leaving very few windows on the western walls.

- Plantation shutters were also used in the ensuite and also the main bathroom as well

- The large 900 Ilve oven that is in the house now is about 5 years old. Plenty of soft closing drawers take care of storage. With a pantry that is deep and well organised. The kitchen mirrored splash back catching the light and the view of the garden.

- The boards that run from east to west on the verandah were milled in Builyan and installed by a local builder Michael Howard, who also did the oversized steps down to the plantation walk (making juggling a toddler and groceries a breeze; he also did the walk in robe.

- The original verandahs were reinstated leaving only two existing handrails as they were in 1905, and the rest were built using Tassie oak dowling to match.

- The garden is full of large Heliconia (Hot Rio Night) which has taken decades to fill the space, and has the most amazing display of flowers right through out the year.

- The mango tree canopy keeps the temperature of the entire yard and house down by at least 5 degrees at the height of summer and the Balinese gardens add dimension with a resort style feel

- We added another layer of timber and some insulation to the external verandah walls and also sheeted the bullnose verandah ceilings

- The idea of a gatehouse was an idea that developed, it has many uses one of them to keep the refreshments while entertaining in the private front garden; the beautiful original french doors recycled out of another Queenslander that we were renovating at the time

At a glance;

- Stunning wrap around verandahs with stairs to the garden, front access via the gatehouse and additional decking through the repurposed doors on the southern side.

- Open plan living and dining detailed with original ' Arts and Crafts' fret work from the ceiling, tongue and groove walls and ceilings, ducted air conditioning as well as an adjoining separate kitchen and formal dining

- Three spacious bedrooms with french doors, high ceilings, fans as well as an ensuite and WIR to the master suite

- Beautiful main bathroom complete with deep bath and toilet. An adjoining powder room also accommodates the Continental laundry.

- Double car accommodation as well as plentiful storage under the home including off street parking and room for a shed or pool if desired

Quite simply, homes with a tale such as this deserve a wonderful keeper.
