The town sits on the lower slopes of Coomber Melon Mountain taken from the Aboriginal name Combamolang, in a district formerly known as Coomber. The area is the traditional home of the Dabee tribe, of the Wiradjuri people. It is 231 km north-west of Sydney, 87 km north of Lithgow and 55 km south-east of Mudgee.
