Rural Property description

“Thomas Cox's butcher shop (c1856) has great bones!”

Please contact Elesa Wood on 0401 676 684 to organise an inspection time.

This unique corner allotment in the heart of Mintaro's historic precinct, is now offered as a blank canvas for the buyer with a bit of imagination and one who's not afraid of a bit of hard work.
A charming property which could wear a number of hats, it's most conveniently positioned diagonally across from the ever popular "Magpie and Stump" Hotel.

Mintaro is an historic town in the eastern part of the Clare Valley, east of the Horrocks Highway, about 126kms north of Adelaide.
This small, thoroughly charming, largely untouched historic town features some of the most significant and captivating buildings and ruins in the state.
Offering a variety of attractions including magnificent walking trails, a large number of nearby wineries, art galleries, eateries and boutique accommodation, Mintaro has long been regarded as one of the region's most captivating and picturesque destinations.

Established in 1849, Mintaro is situated on land which was bought originally by Joseph and Henry Gilbert, which they subdivided into 80 allotments. Mintaro was originally intended as a stopping and resting place for the bullock teams carting copper from the Burra mine to Port Wakefield. Later, it became the centre of an internationally famous deposit of slate.

And the famous Mintaro slate is evident throughout this property. As are the structural elements of its previous life as the local butcher shop. The wide frontage onto Burra Street has an abundance of windows, which offers plenty of natural light into the two largest rooms, which would have showcased all the goods all those years ago. The metal ceilings, low hanging light fittings, Mintaro slate and austere ambience offer the basics for an historic relic with an industrial edge. Could this become a perfect retreat, a residence, or perhaps a studio/working space? There are two other rooms (one with a fireplace), and a cellar. There is a basic kitchen and equally rudimentary bathroom, and two toilets.

Thomas' old Butcher shop has stood the test of time, but now it needs a new custodian to take on a project, and revive and restore it for future generations to enjoy…..are you looking for something….
to get your teeth into? Thomas Cox's butcher shop has great bones!
