Land description

“Parattah Uniting Church.”

Invite all written offers must be presented to the listing agent by 12 pm by Friday 4th February 2022. All offers must be presented using a formal contract of sale, and the vendor reserves the right to accept an offer prior to the date.

The Parattah Uniting 'Presbyterian' Church, erected in 1886, was built on land donated by Mr John Russell of Hobart and opened in 1887. The cost of the building, which opened free of debt, was due to the unselfish benevolence in the cause of Presbyterianism in the district by George Wilson, Jnr, his brother James and William Burbury of 'Inglewood'. Funds raised to build Parattah's first Church were entirely dependent on donations from the local community.
According to 'The Mercury' reporting of the Church's opening in January 1887;

"Our new Presbyterian Church was opened under most favourable auspices on Sunday, 30th ult., at 3 o'clock. This edifice, which is of a modern type of architecture, is an ornament to the township, and it must be highly satisfactory to those who laboured so hard for its erection that it was opened free from debt. I record this fact with much pleasure".

Ninety years after opening as the Parattah Presbyterian Church became part of the Uniting Church and closed in the 1990s

This building has witnessed the joys, triumphs and sadness of the Southern Midlands community, and it is presented as an opportunity for an astute buyer to see the potential. This well-constructed weatherboard Galvanised Iron building sits on dressed Sandstone blocks with solid timber floors and original Baltic pine throughout. High timber ceiling, the vestry at the back offers a sitting room or bathroom with timber finished vestibule offering options entering the home.

Set upon a 0.2208 ha parcel of land with established native bushland with plenty of scope for constructing an additional dwelling upon the property.

Established in 1876, Parattah was a thriving railway township, which has now transformed into a close-knit community of around 100 residents. With strong ties to the timber, agricultural and railway industries, Parattah has several historic buildings which its residents have lovingly restored. Only 8km (8 minutes) south of the Southern Midlands hub of Oatlands (along Tunnack Road), Parattah is an ideal location to enjoy the quiet rural lifestyle.

If you have dreamt of securing and restoring a piece of Southern Midlands history, consider the Parattah Uniting Church at 671 Tunnack Road.

Note: Parattah Uniting Church is not registered upon the heritage list of Tasmania and is not connected to electricity or water supply. To convert the Church into a dwelling or restoration would require approval by the Southern Midlands Council.
