Tarnagulla, in its gold rush height, had 16 pubs and a theatre. With the discovery of gold in 1852, the town was once called Sandy Creek, later changing its name in 1860 after a local property called Tarnagulla Station. Today, the historic town is only two hours from Melbourne and 30 minutes from Bendigo. Though the thrive of the gold rush has gone, it is still a beautiful place for bushwalking and gold fossicking, with the town providing a post office, cafes and a primary school.
