Steeped in history, the house was built by Samuel Shillito, founder of Shillito & Son Engineering, Ipswich, and was owned by generations of the Shillito family.

The name "Brightside" originates from a town in Sheffield, England where Samuel Shillito and his wife Ann hailed from. They travelled to Australia with their small family in 1866, arriving in Moreton Bay on the 'Maryborough'. Samuel and Ann settled in Ipswich and Samuel, who was very enterprising, founded Shillito & Son Engineering – a well known Ipswich engineering firm. The family lived in Ipswich, next to the Shillito foundry on the corner of East and Limestone Streets, and moved up to this house on Limestone Hill (as it was then known) in the early 1870’s.
