Living in Lilyfield
The origin of Lilyfield’s name surprisingly, remains unconfirmed. On one hand it is believed to have acquired its name from the lilies that used to grow in abundance in the fields when the suburb was dairyland. On the other, the origin of the name has been identified as the name of the first post office in north-eastern Leichhardt (which Lilyfield was originally apart of), founded in Lamb Street.
Originally a working-class area, today Lilyfield, like many Inner-West suburbs has been transformed into a family friendly suburb known for its peaceful atmosphere and wonderful parks.
Leichhardt oval in Lilyfield
Understandably, Leichhardt Oval is often thought to be located in Leichhardt but the oval is actually situated in Lilyfield. The oval was first used as a Rugby League ground in 1934, the same year it became the home of the Balmain Tigers. It is an iconic venue, popular amongst both players and supporters of many codes (especially to the NRL?s West Tigers fans, with the oval usually hosting 4 or 5 NRL matches per season). The close-quarters nature of the venue ensures that each sporting clash will prove fierce with an intimate feel for spectators.
Orange Grove Markets
Inner-Westies are very keen on their organic produce and many have found that there is no better place to get their fix than at the Orange Grove markets every Saturday morning. With a huge range of different cuisines, market-goers are spoilt for choice with stalls ranging from gourmet French meals to Argentinian fare. For many Saturday shoppers it goes without saying that a coffee and famous bacon and egg roll are a must to start the day, with the lengthy queue proving well worth the wait. To take full advantage of the Orange Grove Markets, popular advice would be to get in early and reap the benefits!
