This home is unique, an architecturally designed bushfire resistant home set on a 3.5 Acre block with views forever.
The block when purchased came with council approval for a dwelling and the slab had already been poured for the original house.
The challenge here was that the slab has a North/South orientation, making it difficult to achieve the desired solar gain that the new owners were wanting to achieve.
To solve the orientation and construction headaches the owners engaged Nigel Bell, a local Blue Mountains Architect who specialises in solar passive design and bushfire mitigation as well.
First task was to achieve a Solar passive design, the solution was to design the roof in a classic industrial saw tooth profile allowing the northern sun to flood into the living areas, these clerestory windows also open, creating a natural chimney that removes hot air from the room and encouraging fresh cool air into the house from outdoors.
The result is a lovely even light that washes throughout all the spacious living and bedroom areas, its quite remarkable and enhances the feeling of space in what is already a spacious house.
The construction material for the exterior walls is Timbercrete, a material made from sand, wood waste and ground glass and concrete which in the 70mm profile used offers a remarkable four hours of fire protection.
The western face of the house presented a problem too, a lot of intense sun was the problem.
The solution was to add a bushfire rated stainless steel flyscreen mesh to an enclosed verandah, delaying afternoon sun entry to the house while reducing radiant heat on glass during a bush-fire event.
The appeal of this home is immense, it is visually appealing, the rooms are generous in the extreme, there are lovely sight lines, the ceilings are high and it all sits in beautifully in appropriately landscaped gardens.
The infrastructure is excellent too, there is a dam and a rain water tank capacity of 135,000 litres, a new enviro septic tank and a studio in the garden for overflow guests.
This home is terrific, it has been mindfully built taking into account the environs it sits in, it is stylish too as many bushfire resistant homes can look like bunkers, the views are incredible and it's all done!
