What's around Hill Road

Rural Property description

“Reap the rewards with time at Mersey Lea via Liena”

Want to 'save' Tasmania's native forests? Put your money where your mouth is and invest in a plantation that is growing hardwood (eucalyptus) sawlogs. This 82.34 hectare (~ 203 acres) block in northern Tasmania's upper Mersey Valley contains around 44 hectares of highly productive plantation growing on fertile red soils under very high rainfall. The rest of the block is comprised of native forest.

The Shining Gum (Eucalyptus nitens) plantation sits on a mix of flattish, moderate and steeper slopes and is easily accessible from a well maintained road that winds its way through the property. There are also several drivable side tracks that are a legacy of earlier timber harvesting. About a quarter of the plantation is comprised of large 33-year-old trees planted in 1988 and thinned in 2000. The majority of the area was planted in 2004, of which about two-thirds was thinned for pulpwood in 2019 and is now growing rapidly into a saw log crop. There is a Forest Practices Plan to complete the thinning of the rest of the 2004 planted area and will be carried out once conditions allow.

The property is entirely surrounded by State Forest, but is one of only a few private blocks that are located close to the iconic Walls of Jerusalem National Park, as well as other bushwalking opportunities, trout fishing, and kayaking at the Mersey White Water Regional Reserve. While the property is zoned for 'Primary Production', its proximity to outdoor recreational opportunities perhaps offers potential for an eco-tourism venture (STCA).
