MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HONEYEATERS COMMUNITY FARM
Honeyeaters farm is in the foothills of the Barrington Tops next to Copeland Tops State Conservation Area. The property operated as a dairy farm for about 50 years. The soil is rich basalt soil. A permanent spring-fed creek runs through 700 acres of eucalypt and rainforest from adjoining Copeland Tops National Park.
The community farm owns a herd of cattle, a small pecan orchard, a tractor and other farm equipment, and a community shed. The farm has a mix of pasture and bushland areas.
Honeyeaters community wishes to preserve the existing bush land as natural habitat for native wildlife and aims to minimise the use of chemical herbicides & pesticides in gardening, farming, pest and land management.
Lot 2B is one of 8 lots in Honeyeaters multiple occupancy community farm. The total property is 900 acres in size. Each share in the community is entitled to an allocation of 2 hectares (5 acres) of land for their personal use. This can be a parcel around the house and/or a parcel elsewhere (as agreed at a company meeting). Currently Lot 2B only includes the area immediately around the house - this is only because the current owners had no need for more land for their personal use. A new owner is entitled to have additional land.
The 8 building sites form two clusters of houses, one with three houses and one with five set around the knoll of the hill, and set at a comfortable distance from each other. Cluster building:
1. Limits the extent of road building, therefore keeping costs down
2. Lessens the impact on the natural environment
3. Makes fire fighting easier.
Households provide all their own water needs (including fire plan requirements) with water tanks. All houses have access to mains power. House 2B has mains power and solar panels.
Prospective purchasers go through a period of 3 months of getting to know everyone before the community votes on whether to approve the application. This gives all parties the chance to get to know each other. It also provides the opportunity to become involved in community activities, spend time on the farm and get to know the land and the people.
Every family that purchases a unit and share in Honeyeaters nominates a person to be a director of the company. All members participate in the community farm management, engage in the process of decision making by consensus and vote if necessary on all issues concerning the community and property.
