History;
Alluvial Tin is thought to have been discovered as early as 1875 and mined from 1883. However, it was the discovery of a copper deposit in 1908 that drove the establishment of the township of Balfour. Copper was mined intensively between 1908 - 1912 with Balfour's population peaking at 900 during the boom years. From 1913 the boom time began to stagnate and Balfour was all but abandoned by 1924 where the town and the 20km horse drawn tramway to Temma Harbour was lost to time and the Tarkine Rainforest.
