A Brief History:
Formerly the Methodist Church, the property was purchased by the Lutheran Church in 1979 and is one of three original Bluestone Churches in Mortlake, together with Anglican and Uniting Churches. Built on rising country in a prominent location like many Churches, the Lutheran Church is situated in the Bluestone precinct of Mortlake.
The Church was built in 1867 by the builder, Bothrell and the architect was J.A. Doane of Ballarat for 953 pounds. The foundation stone was laid on 15/11/1867 by prominent local pastoralist of national significance, Thomas Shaw Junior.
Thomas Shaw Junior emigrated as a15 year old with his father, a noted wool expert from Yorkshire in 1843. Both he and his father championed the Australian Merino. They urged Australian wool growers to consider precisely what English buyers wanted, to breed sheep fit for their purpose and to prepare their wool better, particularly washing it prior to shearing. Unlike his nomadic father, Thomas Shaw Junior was an earnest, but cheerful teetotaller who bought the pastoral run, Wooriwyrite Station at Darlington in 1854 in partnership with Anderson and Currie. He was well respected, and was the first Shire President of Mortlake in 1863 and also a Shire President of the Hampden Shire several times as well as being a JP and widely acknowledged as an astute judge of Merino Sheep. Shaw built a house for his mother and sisters near Mortlake where one of his sisters married Reverend Fitchett and helped build the Methodist Church. Furthermore, he also presented Mortlake with a museum, temperance hall (both of Bluestone) and built a new homestead overlooking the Mt Emu Creek on Wooriwyrite in 1885. Shaw died at the age of 80 in 1907.
