Melbourne to Brisbane move by the end of May 2013

I am moving from Melbourne to Brisbane. I have a job in the city but want to live near family in Kallangur. What's traffic like peak hour and what's public transport like? How long does it take by train? I have 3kids, high sch, primary and kinder. Rent seems more affordable around those northern areas. We move in 3 weeks, any advice would be great!
Hubby will be looking for work in Fibre Optics.
