Looking to move? need advice from locals please

Kiama Downs, NSW 2533 is located within the Kiama local government area, part of the Illawarra Region in New South Wales.

we are looking to relocate to Kiama from the shoalhaven as my husband works in Kiama. We have looked at numerous homes however, most of them are way out of our price range. there are a couple in Kiama Downs that seem to be reasonably priced and was wondering if anyone could tell us what its like living here. We have a 10 year old daughter so would like to know which schools are really good and if there is much crime here. I lived in Kiama (Gibralter Avenue) many many many many years ago as a child however, it has changed ALOT since I was there. Since the bypass was put in, is the traffic still hectic along riverside drive? I am hoping someone can help me as we will be vitually moving there knowing nobody as we have lived in the shoalhaven for 30 years.
Hoping some knowledgeable locals can shed some light? Cheers

Hi
We have lived in Kiama Downs, by choice over Kiama as it is more family/ kid friendly. We have been here for 14 years and are happy here. Riverside drive is quieter with the bypass and flows well with the traffic lights. Heaps of kids more so than Kiama Heights etc ( we have a 13 & 17 year old). Schools options for Primary are all good, although Minamurra, is quite big compared to SS Peter and Pauls next to the beach in town.

The new IGA at Jones Beach and Barrys butcher at Gainsborough are great and means you donot need to go to Kiama as often. Kiama High School is also big but has great programs for kids and both my boys enjoy and are doing well. Being big also has the advantage of good choice of subjects compared to private schools to the north.

The golf club at Kiama Downs has a courtsey bus, so do some of Kiama clubs. As far as crime we have not had any issues. There seems to be a large number of police that live in the area. Some of the larger streets may have a bit of noise occassionally from people coming back from parties.

Think about distance from the school, as to whether they have to walk or can go the bus. We chose a house which did not allow my kids to catch to school locally.

The skate park, cycle way, river, beach, 2 lots of tennis court, golf course etc. All weekend there has been whaile cruising past the head lands.

Regards Tim
