The City of Los Angeles, (pop. 3.75 million) has a ton of places to explore. It really depends on what you like to do. The L.A. Metropolitan Area (pop. 12.9 million) and the L.A. Consolidated Metropolitan area, (pop.18.1 million) has over 70 miles of beaches,(i.e. Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, etc....), theGetty Museum,Hollywood Boulevard, a tour of the Beverly Hills homes of the Stars,Olivera Street which is where Los Angeles got it's start, Venice Beach,Santa Catalina Island, if you like seafood, Marina Del Rey, Malibu, tons of eateries in West Hollywood, and West L.A. as well as fantastic nightlife. L.A. has it all.

Depends on what you are looking for. What can you afford? Do you want to be close to the beach or inland? Are you visiting or moving to LA? If you are visiting, check out Venice Beach. It's a circus on the Boardwalk. Manhattan Beach has the best beach in the South Bay in my opinion. Santa Monica has a fun pier, and Third Street Promenade has a great mall with lots of restaurants.
