Yes Astor is still operating, but mainly as a live theatre venue rather than cinema. Astor has a long history. It was built by Simon Alexander (after whom the Alexander Building is named, on the opposite corner of Beaufort Street and Walcott Street). The theatre opened in November 1919 as the Lyceum Theatre. It was refurbished and changed its name to the State Theatre in 1939, then was renamed the Astor Theatre in 1941.
