Except for the crime, I would say that Outer Mission is a pretty good place to live if you are single. You are close to City College and can take public transportation (or even bike if you are into that) to SFSU. You are also close to BART so commuting into the Financial District is no big deal.
Also, rents are reasonable, so you could split it with some friends and live here withot too many hassles.
