Safe's suburbs

Hi Emma, That is a really broad area and a bit hard to say - most are as safe as each other. Perhaps you might like to avoid Girrawheen, Koondoola, Lockridge, Balga, some areas of Mirrabooka and apparently Dianella in some spots. Also depends on whether you want public transport close and if you will be working in the city every day. And do you need the car to get to work, or simply visiting it - could be different roads that might be better to live by. Also, consider if you want a unit or a house. $400 will get you something in the outer ranges of your 30 min guide and a flat if you go closer to the city like Maylands. If work is in the city, perhaps check a map of the train lines and see if there is anything suitable nearby in your range. 30 mins to the city by train is gives more opportunities than by car.
