Portola in San Francisco is not a great place to live for singles but it is okay. The main reasons you would want to live here is if you couldn't afford some of the more expensive areas in the city or if you were say a student at SF State but also had a job in the Financial District. This is sort of equidistant.
You won't find a lot of great bars here or tons of other singles but you will find affordable rents and relatively doable commutes.
