What kind of nightlife? There's a great bar scene for young professionals in the Marina, a great bar scene for the hipster set in the Haight and the big nightclub scene is in Soma. There's a lot of cool dive bars in North Beach, etc. . . .depends on what you consider great!

What JenMac said, you need to be specific, because San Francisco is sodom and gamora, or however you spell it. Highend night out? Go to The Big Four at Nob Hill, or Top of the Mark. Jazz clubs? North Beach, and strip clubs too. Basically, whatever you are looking for, someone is selling.
