I'll get things started; my favorite is Frank Norris' McTeague. I love a good homicidal dentist.

this is kinda embarassing--can't think of a single novel set in SF. i can only think of that Josh Hartnett movie--40 days and 40 nights. Ugh.

Okay, this is a little bit pathetic, but I finally came up with one--The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Ick. But I actually can't stand it. The movie was even worse. There has to be something better.

On the Road. I can't believe I forgot Jack Kerouac. although its more of an East Bay novel than strictly a San Fran book. But then again, i'm more of an East Bay Gal.

How about Tales of the City by Armistead Maupan--I love that one and I liked the TV Show too.

On a slightly different topic, I wonder when Michael Chabon will set one of his novels here. I know that he lives in the city, but I don't think he has set anything other than a few short stories here.

I've read his wife's stuff and it is really good. It's non-fiction so it tends to take place in the Bay Area just because that's where they live.

I heard an interview with her on NPR a while back. She sounds really interesting but her stuff is soooo personal. It's almost embarassing to read.

A more recent one that I really admire is Divisidero by Michael Ondaatje. The guy who wrote The English Patient
