"Best suburb I have lived so far."

I have lived in lalor for 10 years now and the strong Melbourne wind that sometimes blow my front doors wide open in the middle of the night, which can be very visible from the front. Never have I experienced a breaking even in that kind of situation. Best suburb in Melbourne!

"Love Lalor. Great for families with kids!"

Not too far from the CBD, just 17km.
We moved to Lalor 3 years now and felt in love with this place. It takes us 2 mins drive to Costco ,Epping Plaza and Northern Hospital.
This place is so convenient as we have lots of different places to shop and it multicultural.
We are going to knock down and rebuild as we can’t afford to buy anywhere in Lalor for double storey 4 bedrooms house anymore.

"AAA"

Good for families with young kids, close to schools both public and private/catholic schools. Lots of sports clubs nearby. Plenty of small shops to go to. Multi cultural. We moved here 10+ years ago. We considered moving and have checked suburbs in the Northeast because we wanted a bigger block of land but it is more convenient to live here. I work near the city and I don’t want to go on a morning and afternoon traffic specially we have small kids to drop off and pick up at school/childcare. In this area that I live in Lalor is just 5 to 7 minutes drive to Costco and Epping Plaza but I still love to go to the local butcher shop, coffee shops, and visit the small shops around. People are alright different cultures but mostly decent people. I once left my shopping bag/car and house keys in one of the shops, I went back and approached the lady who works there she handed me my bag and said the guy found it on the table. Like other places there are of course some rotten tomatoes around luckily I haven’t met one yet.

10 minutes drive to Northern Hospital too. Transport to city is excellent both public or private. The con like any other suburb in Melbourne on taking the train is the parking, it is hard to find a parking spot after 8 am.

CBD is 18 kms away only.

"Convenience, but has some downsides"

Very close to the Northern Hospital and Epping Plaza
Has 2 shopping centres of its own
Smoking is notoriously bad here
Reasonable distance to the city
Has a bad reputation for crime, but not sure this is true
Very nice shopping strip on Station St
Elderly European population - feels like little Macedonia. In fact, there's an area with streets named Ohrid, Bitola, St Nikola and Prilep lol. Good place if you like some nice pastry - Burek.
2 different poles - East being older more established and West having parkland and brand new houses

"Epicentre of crime"

Full of bogans and migrants who don't want to assimilate into Australian culture. Smoking cigarette is like breathing fresh air at the supermarkets and shops. Whittlesea is the worst suburb in Australia and it's worth reading news before moving into this suburb. Thomastown and Lalor make me feel like I am in a third-world country people are yet to evolve fully. Absolute garbage of a place.

"Love Lalor"

Moved back here from the West with my partner and young family 5 years ago. It’s a great place to live with a big variety of house options including the red brick homes behind Station street which were built in the 50s- with character and great for restoring, the 1960s homes on huge blocks and newer modern homes in the Carlingford and Mosaic estates. We are happily living and investing in the area.

Great mix of cultures including European and Middle Eastern which makes for delicious delis and restaurants, burek, and Lebanese pizzas at Lalor shops and hub. Plenty of Kindergartens (offering brilliant programs like Bush Kinder) Catholic and public schools with great teachers to choose from. Fantastic developments in the suburb including the Community Veg Garden and new upgrades to local parks and footy fields not to mention plenty
of events supported by the Whittlesea Council.

We are also a couple minutes away from Pacific Epping, Costco, the Northern Hospital and Lalor Station which is a huge convenience for all.

Highly recommend people consider Lalor as a place to live and enjoy.

"Good little gem"

Been living here for almost ten years and I wouldn't leave. There's all the shops you'd want, easy links to the city, easy links to various freeways for a weekend away and easy access to the airport.

The comments about crime on here are ridiculous, that same crime happens elsewhere too. I lived in Northcote for a while and then St Kilda and Mentone before that, and the same crime mentioned in the below comments happened there too. Unfortunately, it happens everywhere.

Definitely put Lalor on your list to check out when looking at suburbs to live in, it's really good!

"Worst suburb I have EVER lived in!"

Having moved from Eltham, the culture shock was HUGE, I have never felt so unsafe in a neighbourhood, and I have also lived in the South East suburbs of Melbourne. As someone else wrote, most houses here have roller shutters for a reason.. I have also seen bullet holes through roller shutters around here too! Crime rate is high, people are unfriendly and RUDE, I can’t wait to move from here. I don’t even feel safe taking my dog for a walk in daylight, this is not a place I would want to raise kids. The only reason I gave Lalor 2 stars is because despite it being a s**thole, there are decent ammenities around.

I dont know which part of Lalor your from man! Look at the racv crime rate burglary statistics. Know your facts first! The difference between Eltham & Lalor is almost the same.

rubenr

Maybe because of your attitude that makes people not to respect you. Just like your comments above.

adelem3

Ruebnr Burglary is not the only crime that exists.. I have never lived in an area where a grenade gets thrown into someones house https://www.google.com/amp/amp.abc.net.au/article/9784644
Also, Im not referring to anyone in particular disrespecting me, Im just referring to peoples behaviours that I have witnessed in the area, e.g people being rude at stores too cashiers, people driving like crazy on the roads, etc.

rubenr

I drive around Brighton rd, st Kilda & Nepean highway everyday & youll see selfish & speeding drivers around. Its no different, but the same attitude!

rubenr

I lived in Lalor for over 8 years. My neighbours are all hard working & nice people. No bogans honestly!

rubenr

Just a suggestion, maybe you need to move further out into the farm. More like pass Doreen or 50kms + away from the CBD. If you want peace & harmony.

You are deluded.

Family friendly neighbors. Very Safe for kids to play around the park or roam around with their bikes. Area is close to everything, from shops, schools & recreation centres.
Median house price is continuously growing which is a positive sign for both thomastown & Lalor suburb. High st can be a bit traffic, but then there’s alternative route you can use like going thru Edgar’s Rd or Dalton Rd to get thru the ring Rd.
I recently sold my house from Carlingford, the new area in Lalor & moved to an older house in the same suburb, so I could get a bigger backyard.
I must say I love the area & the people around are very friendly.

Moved in recently but had friends live here for a long while. I am happy we made the move. The shopping strip is fantastic. Public transport good, schools & community centres is what you would expect from an established district.
Close to Ring Road and please build the North East Link!

Gentrifying but still holds a fantastic old school multicultural community ethos. Vibrant market, great food, excellent library and close to everything you need on a day to day basis. Not the end of the earth, will hipsterise with the ripple effect from the inner north.

"Not surprised."

Lalor is not far from the city and the train/ buses are great. Beats renting inner city with the noise, traffic and graffiti (moved from Brunswick)
the cost of renting a new 2 bedroom unit with some land is excellent. Markets are very good and a mixed demographic is pleasant. Ring road is near and so is Preston Market, which we love going to.

"Rejuvenation."

It is more than I expected after moving back to the North 18 years later.
Priced out of Reservoir and Preston but was surprised at the markets and shops here. Reservoir has none of this so I am glad that we made the move. Old houses are being pulled down for new units.
As Lalor is an older suburb most infrastructure and services are here. Younger people coming back into the area.
Feel safe here, I have rented in some 10 other Melbourne suburbs and find Lalor on par with others for noise and traffic.

A year or so on and we are on the move. Honeymoon is over and the decision has been made to raise our family elsewhere.

What made you move out of the area?

edelem

Lalor is not trendy and stylish, Unless you count boarded-up homes and shops as stylish. If you have since moved because you dont feel safe, perhaps its best to remove your first comment which is really not true.

"Demograhic change coming..."

As people get priced out of Preston and Reservoir, the next option turns to Lalor and Thomastown. A lot of young professionals are moving into the area buying into either units and townhouses. A lot of construction happening at the moment with many builders opting to purchase old properties to knock down and sub divide.
I have noticed a lot of the shops on station st are beginning to get that Fitzroy/Northcote overhaul and it wont be long until the cafes are taken over by gen y's.
One of the best fruit markets in Melbourne which is situated at Station St. a great community spirit which is based on multiculturalism and history.
As the properties continue to develop and improve so will Lalor. Get on now before the prices start to soar.

Judging by your overly positive review of this shabby, unsafe suburb you must be either a Real Estate agent or a developer. Best to be transparent. People might move there based on your propaganda and then have to move again

"Great place to to live"

Great place to live, a lot of the european residents of the 70s/80s have now moved on. (either sold or renting). The area has way to many rental properties, bringing in bogan neighbours who don't look after there gardens and giving the once beautifull kept gardens and clean streets a bad look. I highly recommend buying in the area to live, if you want to buy and rent it out or develop, piss off to another suburb.

Infrastructure is excellent, heaps of schools, shops and transport services.
