"If you have a brain and your own teeth, don’t move here!"
The tourists love it. They come in droves over the holidays, driving at speed, killing wildlife, double parking, walking 5 people wide across the roads, leaving rubbish everywhere, tearing up the National Park, letting their dogs roam and chase the roos and local wildlife. Lazy visiting parents let their kids graffiti the roads and destroy public property. Generally zero respect for residents. Residents HATE the tourists and call them terrorists. Residents hate each other, the place is Gippsland’s gossip capital and whether it’s true or fabricated, no-one’s life is off limits for a spicy story spread at the pub or the local, crappy cafe. Speaking of the crappy cafe - the obese owner and his rude wife will ignore you unless you’re one of their in-crowd. Ice/methamphetamine sale and abuse is rife. Domestic abuse is too. Alcoholism is standard and the drinking culture is ingrained. Burglaries are frequent and the police presence is negligible except over the holidays when the revenue raising opportunities are abundant. There are stories aplenty about the current local police officer and no one has lasted the distance in that position here. The local supermarket is overpriced and poorly stocked. The other food opportunities are poor and overpriced at best, with the exception of great toasties from the local toasty van. You wouldn’t want to go to the pub on the off seasons, the locals there still behave like they did 50 years ago, only now with even fewer teeth. It’s such a shame as the location is really gorgeous. The people, the lack of council and government investment of any kind, the giant mosquitoes, midges, march flies and jellyfish ruins it. Really cheap properties back before covid has kept the permanent demographic to that of some of the lowest economic denominator which may explain the community here, or holiday makers who contribute little to the community. The lovely people keep to themselves so you don’t experience them often. Or they leave, an even better option. There’s a very good reason there are always so many properties here on the market. If you’re thinking of buying here - caveat emptor! Don’t say you weren’t warned.
