Balmain

"Sydney's best kep secret except on New Year's Eve!"

Balmain East is almost a self contained village East of the main part of Balmain. It is the oldest suburb in Sydney apart from The Rocks. It has excellent parks for the dogs and children, first class transport on our doorstep with a great ferry service (one stop to Darling Harbour or a couple to Circular Quay), and bus service right to/from the wharf. As it is at the end of the peninsula, many houses have good water views - hence the expensive real estate here. However, it is worth it for a 10 minute trip to the CBD and the peaceful lifestyle - you can take a glass of wine to the waterfront park in the evening and relax, instead of sitting in a traffic jam for hours. Neighbours are friendly and supportive, though some new 'Balmain Eastites' with megabucks think they make the rules and sometimes get away with it (same everywhere!). We get invaded at New Year's Eve by people wanting to share our great Harbour Bridge view but we don't mind! Don't pay any attention to the property sales stats/trends as there are so few house sales here per year (less than 20 usually) that the stats cannot be relied on.
