Macrossan Street

"The Heart of Port Douglas"

When people talk of Port Douglas, e.g. accommodation in Port Douglas, they are often referring to Macrossan Street. This is where a lot of the shops and restaurants of this tourist town are located.

The street has been developed over the years, and is still being developed with the latest block of apartments Coconut Grove now rearing as a concrete block from where an old-style motel set in, yes, a coconut grove used to be. A "rush of testosterone", to quote the local paper, led to the trees being smashed down, and apparently some vegetation has to be replanted by the developers, although that was months ago.

However, there are still (some) trees remaining and the development has been low-rise, so there remains some feel of the tropics, with Four Mile Beach down one end, and the park where the Sunday Markets are held down the other.

Whether you would want to stay in this street is a matter of personal preference

Nice review... sounds sad about the development in the area. When I visited a few years ago it still felt like a tiny town in amongst the tropical greenery. Do you have any photos of what it currently looks like?
