Renown Park

"Renown Park - Inner City Secret"

I've lived in McQuillan Avenue, Renown Park for over 15 years now and I've seen it evolve into a great suburb. The convenience factor alone is brilliant! Being very close to North Adelaide's Aquatic Centre, O'Connell Street's restaurants and cafes, Prospect Road, the Picadilly Cinema five minutes in one direction and Greater Union five minutes in the opposite direction, the beaches, the airport, the Entertainment Centre, the tram line, and you're within walking distance of the CBD!

There're a great range of schools within easy reach such as Blackfriar's, Wilderness and St Dominic's and there are fantastic medical facilities close by including Calvary Hospital, the Women and Children's and the Queen Elizabeth.

Renown Park is well established with lots of nice landscaping. At the start of Spring, the flowering plums are in bloom along McQuillan Avenue and also other streets and it's magnificent. Being an established suburb, there are some really nice homes to be found and well-manicured gardens. There are lots of open space areas with playgrounds for children or walking the dog. A five minute walk and you're into the Adelaide Parklands.

The general area which includes Brompton, Ridleyton, Croydon, Ovingham is very safe and fairly quiet. The neighbours are from a diverse cultural mix and all are very friendly. Being inner suburban, the older homes are being redveloped into smaller townhouses and therefore bringing people even closer. However, the mix of people is progressively changing from elderly couples to younger professionals who enjoy the close proximity of the city without having to put up with living in a cramped apartment.

There is a bit of traffic during morning peak hour along the main roads but nothing unexpected. There's the train crossing along Torren's road which sometimes causes some delays but the upside is that there is a convenient train station (Ovingham Station) which is close by. Renown Park is a small suburb but it does span South Road. South Road is quite busy with lots of heavy traffic during peak hour but away from this road, the congestion lowers significantly. The intersection of Torrens and South, marked by the long-established McDonalds restaurant, is quite busy during peak hour but delays are comparible to other major junctions.

The suburb is very well serviced with public transport. Buses travel frequently past on Torrens Road, Churchill Road, Hawker Street, and South Road. There is Ovingham Station for those who prefer rail or the tram line which ends at the Entertainment Centre. However, to get the to tram line will require a 20 minute walk or a 2 minute drive along Chief Street (from McQuillan Ave). Renown Park is also just outside the AdelaideMetro's "2-Section" zone for bus travel - therefore getting off just a few stops earlier in North Adelaide and walking will save nearly 50% in bus fares.

Renown Park is great for people who enjoy being close to the city and all the amenities that come with such a location but also enjoy the quick drive to the beach or enjoying a nice coffee along one of the several close cafe strips. The area is culturally diverse and friendly, with lots to discover but above all, it's also affordable.
