Summer Hill
26th July 2025

"Raising Kids in Summer Hill's Urban Village"

We moved into the Flour Mill just after construction finished, and it's been the best decision we've made as a family. Summer Hill is a genuine community where neighbours ors stop for chat and local businesses remember you.
Living in the Flour Mill is a treat. Headlands Coffee in the Mungo Scott building roasts on-site and serves still-warm pastries each morning. The Granary Café handles lunch, Bekya Egyptian Kitchen covers dinner, and the Flour Mill Markets pop up on the first and third Sundays with rotating stalls. The Little B.I.G. House community space hosts regular family events, and we've made so many friends through their toddler playgroups. They've done a brilliant job incubating a community with diverse interests - from parents' groups to yoga and fitness sessions.
The walkability makes a difference. Every morning, I walk my 2-year-old to daycare. He loves spotting dogs and saying hello. The fact that we can avoid a car when needed helps with routine. Weekends usually include an hour at the Darrell Jackson Gardens playground, which feels like an extended backyard shared with half the suburb.
We're incredibly excited about the GreenWay. It'll remove the Parramatta Road barrier, reintegrating Summer Hill to the bay run and creating even more car-free space for little legs to explore.
What really sets Summer Hill apart is how everyone looks out for each other. Whether it's neighbours sharing recommendations or spontaneous playdates forming at the park - there's a warmth here that's rare in Sydney. Even our local dentist behind the optometrist on Lackey Street visits Rise and Shine daycare to do dental hygiene demonstrations. It's these little touches that make it feel like a real village.
The Lackey Street village strip has everything we need - groceries, restaurants, that kid-friendly dentist, and more. Summer Hill balances that village feel with city convenience. We're 10 minutes by train or about 20 minutes off-peak by car from Central, but it feels like a world away. It's safe, green, friendly, and full of young families.
For anyone looking to raise kids in a real community - where your children grow up knowing their neighbours and you can walk everywhere that matters - Summer Hill is a great option. We can't imagine living anywhere else.
