Darra

"Unsafe place to live- high crime, break and enters, theft of vehicles"

i have been a resident for 4 years and have seen the crime rate in darra increase significantly to the point where we are looking to move out of our house. we do feel for new people moving into the area who have not had the opportunity to look at this review.
my neighbour's car was stolen out of his driveway whilst he was home- it has an immobiliser key- figure that out!!!

We were looking to move into this area from Sydney and because you just can't really trust what people are saying on here (especially if they're trying to sell their house,) I did an online News search using suburb names around this part of Brisbane (Inala, Darra, Richlands, Durack etc...) and sadly every time they popped up it had something to do with burglaries, armed hold-ups & domestic violence (don't take my word for it, try it yourself.) According to the last census I also found they also have very high renters & public housing compared to the rest of Brisbane. As much as we'd like a lower mortgage when we move to Brissy, I don't think I want to raise my kids in these areas.

Absolute rubbish!! My family have lived in Darra for 60 years, one of the longest residential terms in the suburb. I find it no more "unsafe" than any other Brisbane suburb and in fact the rate of crime here is low compared to that in some of the so-called "better suburbs". A grat place to live, quiet, good shopping that has improved with the addition of our very own Woolworths. Outstanding Vietnamese restaurants - people come from all over Brisbane to dine here. I have no qualms about dining here in the evening and walking home through the quiet streets afterwards. So many friendly people here, always someone to say hello to. More like living in a village or country town. However there is a lot of progress taking place - the new railway station, additions to the schools, sprucing up of the local shopping strip, increased work on roads and kerbing, improvements planned for local parklands, a lovely new public housing apartment complex near the station, to name but a few. Anyone who is afraid to live in this suburb must be paranoid indeed.

yes Darra has a lower crime rate then Corinda, Sherwood and Graceville. I dont know why but they do.
i think Darra is a little gold mine too, any where along the train line is gold. i call the train line the yellow brick road. follow it when buying and you cant go wrong. that type of public transport is getting ever more valuable as the roads are so poorly constructed and cant keep up with demand.

There are still a few huge blocks in Darra, (i hate to admit it) great for subdividing down the track as those areas get rezoned because of congestion in town. when it gets to congested in the CBD they rezone further out creating more shopping amenities to pull people out of town. Oxley is getting a bit of a make over soon and Corinda and Sherwood got the go ahead to make 6 - 8 level high apartments with all sorts of shops underneath. Oxley was looked at like a crappy area. "poxy Oxley" but now property have sold for over 600K in that suburb v.s. 10 years ago you could buy a 3-4 bedder around 100K! my point is Brisbane gets bigger.
Property doubles in value every 7 years. convenience of shops and transport is valuable and Darra has that and heaps of potential. and yeah i think its safe. young families can afford to buy there, in creasing the child friendly atmosphere. these families renovate there homes and increase the value by doing so. growth and comfort are some of Darra's attributes, along with a lot of what Gordon45 stated above.

@gordon45 - Absolute rubbish or not Gordon, don't blame me, after all I don't think I'm being irrational, its the news media that is making these claims, I'm just an outsider looking for a safe environment to raise my kids in. I'm sure you would do the same if you were moving to NSW and didn't know anything about the areas. Anyway, we decided to buy a house in Acacia Ridge, just a hop, skip and a jump from Inala & Darra ;)

Gordon45

Well, dimsum, you should do your own homework before making rash comments and don't believe the media - although I am not aware of any adverse media comments regarding Darra specifically. And personally, I wouldn't care to live in Acacia Ridge, but each to their own.

Acacia Ridge is not any different compared to Darra, there are some crime on that part of suburb too.

dimsum you should listen to Gordon45 he is 100% correct . I live in Darra more then 25 years and I wish every one to live in such safe place. You choose Acacia Ridge? You couldn't choose worst. I was a BCC bus driver for 20 years and one suburb where we had a security guard was Acacia Ridge. We've got nice looking suburb Forest Lakes with such a crime rate that is a real problem with home insurance and termites love the place !! Darra is not flashy but safe to live and rise children . Bonus very cheap to buy groceries and butchers with one of the cheapest and very good quality fresh meat in Brissy. Woolies don't come even close! Easy short distance to many Shopping Towns with excellent public transport . 25 min. to Brisbane Center via train. Try to do it by car! Many state , private schools & collages with very high standard within short distance.I know this because my two children were rised and educated to Uni. degree living here.Darra will still improved because of very handy location to all amenities .
