Tumut

"A small town named Tumut"

Tumut is a town where the local government has neglected to provide infrastructure that supports career opportunities for women. Apart from Woolworths, Coles, small retail and the nursing home, there is very little here for women who do not wish to simply raise children. As a consequence there is an abundance of young single mothers !
The young adults of the town also have few recreational activities available and as a consequence cause trouble by getting drunk and roaming the streets, breaking into cars, smashing windows etc. The local police station closes every night at 1am so it can be quite scary.
The locals are not overly friendly to newcomers and making friends is hard if you are not a Tumut native.
Pig hunting is the sport of choice for young men, a recreation that is as brutal for the dogs they take on the hunts as it is for the pigs they butcher.
There is no permanent doctor on staff at the hospital as they get called in from the local medical centre. This has the effect of lowering mortality because you have to wait for the doctor to arrive. Make sure your heart is in good coronary health if considering moving here!
If you come from a big city like I do you will miss the nightlife (there is one pub open til 2am and there are many fights there), you will miss the dining options (pub grub is as good as it gets in Tumut) and you will miss the clothing shopping options (one small Target Country). The biggest shop is a Go-Lo which says a lot about the dominant socio-economic class in town.
There is no public transport and the public schools have lower levels of literacy than the state average. I regularly meet teenagers who can't read...
It is possible to live comfortably in Tumut, but at price.

Great for

  • Cheap cost of living
  • Very pretty

Not great for

  • Jobs hard to get
  • Minimal eating out
  • No public transport

Perhaps if you spent a little more time in Tumut you might actually appreciate what it has to offer. Tumut is a small country town so please don't move here with the expectation that there will be the night life and shopping opportunites that the city has.
Saying that the biggest shop in town is Go-Lo clearly shows that you didn't venture to far.
As for the Public Schools literacy levels i think you will find that the NAPLAN results are above or substantially above the state average.
Tumut really does have a lot to offer when you look outside your own little bubble. Please don't move to Tumut from the city and expect to have the same lifestyle that the city has otherwise you may be as bitterly disappointed as the person that wrote this review. There are a lot more positive points to Tumut than the negitives that have been focussed on in this review.

In regards to the Police Station this info is also incorrect

You all dont seem to understand that this is a review of a town. It is meant for people who do not live in the town. The people who come to read these reviews are mostly going to be city people looking for a tree change. The review accurately describes what will be different and what people might miss from their city living if they moved here. You should probably concern yourselves more with the way you portray yourselves and try to earn some good reviews, rather than arguing with the accurate ones.

The opinions expressed within this review are those of the individual and not those of Homely.com.au.
