Cairns City

"Jewel of the North"

Everyone who holidays here secretly wishes they lived here.... the only thing that would make Cairns perfect is a proper surf beach but then the developers would come in and totally ruin it for everyone!!!! No traffic (but locals think it is terrible - get them to drive in a capital city and compare then!)

lol um Traffic? It is a nightmare. Reservoir road sux. Cook hidhway sux. Try driving from Edmonton to the city in peak hour... Worse than sydney or melbourne. You must be an estate agent trying to spin something. Maybe you live in Gordonvale. :-(

I lived in Edge Hill and worked in Woree. Leave at the wrong time morning or afternoon and it took up to 50 minutes to get there or back on weekdays. Weekends takes maybe 12 minutes depending on traffic.

dono13 you have no idea. Ive lived in Sydney most of my life and now live in Cairns. Edmonton to Cairns City is like 1/4 of the time it takes from places like the Blue Mountains, Campbelltown, Wollongong, Central Coast and Newcastle to the Sydney CBD in peak hour.

amanda-stonea

Monos, can i ask how long have you lived in Cairns now from moving from sydney? Have you regretted it at all. Thinking of moving from sysney to cairns with my young family. Thanks in advance

ianaj

amanda-stonea, Monos, we too are looking at moving from Sydney (western Sydney) to cairns with 2 little ones. We are actually looking at properties in Palm Cove next weekend. I too would love to hear your thoughts on the relocation. Any tips/suggestions :)

I am also considering a move with a young family (primary school age), from western sydney. Any suggestions on areas to avoid?

Any suburb starting with "M'.

What is everybody complaining about, there is no traffic in Cairns. not even in peak hour!!!!!

gaynor-coatesg

Samr10. You can't have lived here by that comment. Peak hour traffic can be bad. Depends where you live and work. It's due to the roads. Say driving from northern beaches to the city. Unlike large cities you might have 6 different routes you can choose. Here it's generally one route with one or two lanes. Nowhere near as bad as say melb or syd but it does get congested peak hour.

I moved here from Sydney over 5 years ago and can't wait to get back there. See all other comments. Cairns is a nice place to visit but it will become a nightmare in no time. You've never seen service like this, crooks everywhere out to get your money for unbelievably bad service. Yes, everything but housing is expensive. Morons will soon get to you, unless you're one of them. Try Central/South coast of Sydney, at least you'll be close to the big city if you need anything. No such luck here, you'll be stuck with the bogans and summer heat. Neither much fun!

They are building new bypass to ease congestion from the beaches

Kimberley Street

"Quiet - it's a no-through road!"

Nestled just off Reed road and in front of Smithfield Village estate, Kimberley Street is quiet with a mix of families and couples living here. So handy to schools and JCU.

"Verbena Drive! Quiet with close access to schools, shops and parklands!"

I didn't want to give the street a spruik until I'd sold the house (might have looked a bit biased) but Verbena Drive is AWESOME! Just sold no. 116 and what a hidden gem this street is! This looping drive isn't a through road, it is a nice wide street with a mix of brand new and near new houses that look mostly owner occupied so you know they look after their properties well!

Take a drive on Verbena Drive and check this area out... when another house comes on the market here snap it up! top spot - I'd live there if I moved!

Michaelangelo Drive

"Michaelangelo Drive - The Gateway for Family Living!"

Michaelangelo Drive is the main road in to the heart of old Redlynch.

Recent work has been done to install traffic lights at the junction of Michaelangelo Drive and Redlynch Intake Road to cope with the amount of traffic coming from the schools and to and from Redlynch Valley Estate. Redlynch Intake Rd will eventually have to be 2 lanes either way to keep pace with traffic and development.

Redlynch Intake Road is currently the major road running up and down the Valley. Residents are organising a petition for the Government to introduce a second road into the Valley to 1. relieve congestion at the junction of Michaelangelo Drive and Redlynch Intake Road in the early mornings and afternoons (school and work traffic). And 2. as emergency evacuation in case of local disaster.

Homes in this area were originally built in the 80s with development slowly progressing upward to present day. The area is popular with families due to close proximity to shops and schools.

"Caravonica - Tops for Privacy and Community"

Excellent mix of prestige and middle class homes it is close to the highway yet far enough to overlook the cane fields with a lot of homes having the best views out to Green Island. No crime and safe streets makes it ideal for retirees and families. Excellent access to Cairns city, beaches and airport and up the hill to Mareeba.

Westcourt

"Suburbia Close To The City"

Westcourt is much maligned due to it's proximity to some of the so-called 'dodgy' areas of Cairns. But there are families and elder Australians who mainly live here and if it was such a bad area would you raise a family here??? There is much to do and a short walk or ride into Cairns city itself is not out of the question for the fit and adventurous!

I work in and around Westcourt and property here is well looked after - location, location, location!

This is not true. Lot of commision houses here. I recall one 80 year old man being beaten to death here for a digital watch. forget

suzies

I disagree with you thread ChoofChoofChoof. I live in Westcourt and there are two streets that has a scatter of commission flats on them. But most of the homes are owned by families and old Cairns residence. I live in Westcourt and I have no regrets buying here.

hilaryt

I recently brought in Westcourt. Great neighbours. Quite a few home owners are elderly and been here for decades and families. I lived in Parramatta Park prior and was robbed while we slept. Havent had that experience in Westcourt yet.

jessieo1

Westcourt is great! Super quiet neighbourhood and close to town and DFO. This might surprise you Choof Choof, but commission homes are place in every suburb across Cairns except City View

Further to the above - its meant to say "Park Ridge" and not "City View"

"Home With A View"

Whitfield has a diverse range of homes and the higher you go up the hill slopes the more they are worth!

This suburb is arguably the prestige suburb of Cairns with close access to the city and yet not a major thoroughfare. Ideal for all types of homeowners and owner occupiers prevail.

Machans Beach

"It's "Kuranda By The Beach"! The Unique Suburb of Cairns!!!"

Strong community spirit and diverse culture - Machans residents are passionate about their suburb and it isn't hard to see why!

Local state school, public transport, minutes from Cairns City, lack of over-development make this suburb a trip back in time to what the Gold Coast was before hotel development! Fibro shacks, Queenslanders, modern yet funky architect designed houses add to the diversity of the laid-back community. But don't fire them up or they will band together to keep their place in our part of the world special! Machans is an integral part of Cairns culture.

Yorkeys Knob

"Small Suburb - Big Community!!!"

One of those Cairns sleepy beachside suburbs that thrives in it's isolation. Not yet a commercially developed suburb, the future for Yorkeys is bright and has nearby access to major shopping at Smithfield and a short journey 'up the hill' to Kuranda and the Tablelands and away from the highway.

Golf course, fishing, marina and parks make this a top leisure spot. Local state school as well for the young family.

Redlynch

"Redlynch Valley - Should Be Heritage Listed!"

The suburb of Redlynch incorporating Redlynch Valley is arguably the best area to be a kid! With the constantly flowing Freshwater Creek providing canoeing adventures, Crystal Cascades for waterfalls and rockpools for swimming it is a haven for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Plenty of challenging bushwalking tracks await the brave and secret swimming holes only known by locals are bonus attractions but I'm not going to tell you where!

As a local living real estate agent I may be biased :) but this is million dollar property down the Valley - without that price tag. If you want to live somewhere with the family and be in an active community and still live in Cairns but not FEEL like you live in Cairns then check the Valley out!

"But it's a long drive to get there....." It just gives you more time to appreciate the rural aspect still prevailing down the Valley so when you get home all the stress is blown away.

And when the sun goes down over the mountain...... "Dragon Mountain" as my daughter calls it.... the locals come out and have a beer with their neighbours in the street........ kids will ride their bikes or scooters in the street and you know that they are safe.......... the sound of a mower or two reverberates along the street and the Valley breeze kicks in under the shadow of the mountain.... and you accidentally leave the garage door up all night but no-one has stolen anything.............

Ah yes, there is nowhere else in FNQ I'd rather be...........!

Lillipilli Street

"Quiet with close access to schools"

Lillipilli Street has a variety of styles in the housing and is in a newer part of Redlynch. Just up the road from the school and a short drive to the shops this area is an ideal place for the kids to grow up with plenty of parkland, huge sports ovals at Redlynch and St Andrews and a vibrant community.
