Fawkner

"Fawktastic!"

Close to the city with a great sense of community. Easy access to the East and West via the Ring Road or Bell Street. You can head into the city quickly via the train or bike path. A fantastic suburb to raise a family. Close to the city and Campbellfield shopping plaza (Aldi, Kmart, Chinese acupressure, Officeworks etc.) and has pockets of great shops scattered throughout the suburb (Jimmy's in Arglye St, Major Road, Bonwick St, Anderson Rd). An increasing number of cafes (e.g. Eatitalian) and lunch options (e.g. best cheese pie shop is Alnour Bakery) and if you want something different for date lunch/night Coburg is just down the road (e.g. Wild Timor Coffee, Post Office Hotel). You don't get through traffic because the Merri Creek borders the Eastern side of the suburb. Somewhat neglected by the Moreland City Council, the suburb gets minor improvements here and there so the parks are in need of updating but that is happening slowly. It's a great mix of people - lots of different generations of immigrants from different places attracted by the large block sizes and schools in the area. Fawknerites do love the illegal fire crackers around special occasions (e.g. NYE, Eid, Christmas) but it's pretty quiet otherwise (especially away from the main roads) and if you look at crime stats compared to neighbouring suburbs Fawkner is consistently safer. An increasing number of community run initiatives mean that the future for Fawkner is bright.
