Sailors Gully Road

"The place to be!!"

Eaglehawk is a very unique place to live...not far from central Bendigo...it has its own character and piece of history. The mine on the left of Sailors Gully Road as you leave to the north was once a bustling mine ...employing many locals. The property for sale is opposite the old mine. It was built in approximately 1863-1868 era and was a substantial brick residence ...it was built as the mine managers home. Many windows bare the bolts of the time where it is supposed that gold was stored and the security was tight!
The home did have a wooden hut/cottage attached at the rear which was connected to the brick residence via a hand hewn thatch like timber roof. The roof was offered to the local council when demolition of the rear hut began ..unfortunately no interest was shown in that roof.
The chimney in the new loungeroom (in the new extention) is the original chimney which was probably used as a kitchen fire place in the hut. As the new work began the only piece of the old hut/cottage required to be kept in place was this chimney!
The main bedroom area was once the main office of the mine....the doorway to the laundry was supposed to have been a door into the pay office. If those wall could talk!!
Previous owners have scoured the dirt in the cellar for any gold traces..alas no-one ever reported finding any!
With street to street access this house would be fabulous for those who need access for vehicles or showroom areas! The house is well known in the area ..and has been referred to as the house with the flag pole!
Any new owner would be proud to call Eaglehawk home...especially if they came home to this beauty on Sailors Gully Road!!
