My family have lived in Camberwell as well as the surrounding suburbs for many years. Camberwell is quite a big suburb and some areas are more attractive - eg. closer to Burke Rd compared to those closer to say Toorak Road. Hawthorn is better than Camberwell in terms of urban feel, ethnic diversity and interesting food options. However it's more congested than Camberwell with tight blocks and little parking. Some people find Canterbury quaint but it doesn't have enough diversity for me and can feel quite conservative. I think Camberwell has a lot going for it. It's very green with great options for activity - walking, bike-riding etc. Easy public transport - trains, trams, quick to city. Good quality fruit, veg and deli. People take pride in maintaining their pretty houses and gardens. Contrary to other opinions, I find people friendly and easy going. It can feel a little remote from the 'real world' at times but mostly I just enjoy the quiet calm atmosphere.
