"Absolutely the best of inner city life"
I have lived in the area for over 30 years and love it. It's close to the city with a good train service to all the sporting and cultural facilities but surrounded by parkland. Station St shopping centre is one of the two best local shopping strips in Melbourne. Not having a large chain supermarket means that the local shops thrive. Brenta's Meats and Cardamone's supermarket are two of the best food retailers in the city. Better meat, fruit and veggies than either Coles or Woolies, not to mention all the goodies from Marisa's Kitchen. Fairfield Primary school is excellent and there are plenty of kindergartens and childcare places. No matter where you live in Fairfield you are less than ten minutes walk or two minutes bike ride from the parks along the Yarra River or Darebin Creek. I ride along the Boulevarde over the river every morning and it is hard to believe we are just 6km form the centre of the city. Melbourne Uni, RMIT and LaTrobe Uni are all handy. The Austin hospital is close and so are all the city hospitals. Thornbury High School is thriving with a principal who is regarded in the Education Department as one of the very best. The bars and restaurants of High St Northcote are close. Whenever I walk down the street I bump into people I know. Half the shopkeepers know me and my family by name. My elderly mother feels comfortable walking around the streets because she knows that many of the people she meets will know other members of our family even if she has never seen them before. If you must live in a city this is the best place to be.
