Manning

"Watch out for aircraft noise. Seriously."

We lived in the lower part of Como for 10 years but recently moved because of the massive increase in aircraft noise. You get planes on departure routes from both runways of Perth airport flying over Como and Manning, Salter Point, Waterford and Applecross. If you don't like aircraft noise DO NOT move to these areas. You have been warned. Do your research. It was a fantastic area but the sheer increase in aircraft numbers due to the mining boom and increased travel to Bali etc with no curfew at Perth airport means 24/7 aircraft. You will easily get 120 a day fly over when the winds are from the South, South East, South West and Westerlies are the worst. Worst time for aircraft noise is around 5:15am when all the flights go up to the mines. There are clumps of planes at 12:00midnight, 1:00am, 2:00am a couple here and there at 3:00am and 4:00am and then about 20 or so from 5:15am to 6:00am...then they are spread out during the day. Lots during the day. Nights are worst for noise.

Air Services Australia advises this is going to get worse - more and more planes.

Great for

  • Close to Freeway
  • Close to River
  • Good schools

Not great for

  • Aircraft noise
  • Lots of Homeswest

I am a Manning resident and flew to the Pilbara yesterday. I thought this comment was somewhat exaggerated and confirmed that yesterday - by the time our flight was anywhere near Manning the plane was above the clouds which would explain why we hardly ever hear them. I think this person might be very sensitive as we are not affected at all. We sometimes hear the flight around 12-1am ish time if we are still awake with windows open but it is not low - for heaven's sake it's not like living in Belmont - sorry we don't agree at all with these comments.

I Agree with Helen S. No issues with Aircraft Noise. There is superficial noise in every suburb, if you would be looking for a really quiet location good to go straight out to the wheatbelt, no noise and not much else out there.

Have to firmly agree about noise. If you live in an older house closer as we do, especially one closer to the river near Salter Point, noise can be more pronounced due to less obstacles (houses, trees etc) to reduce aircraft noise. The noise has become considerably worse in the mornings over the last 5 years since we moved here. Noise is a subjective issue, however we do not consider ourselves overly sensitive to noise as I have lived near motorways & trains. But between 11pm and 6am the backround noise in Manning is very low, as opposed to 8am. Also the air is much colder (and therefore denser) at nighttime/early morning and it is well documented that this increases the noise levels generated by aircraft (refer to the numerous studies on Sydney's Kingsford Smith airport). From 5am until 7pm there were at least 16 departures.

Dont get me wrong - I love Manning and have no plans to move but aircraft noise is becoming an increasingly worse problem and older house without insulation and thiner glazing will suffer. On the postive, the noise level is such that it can be remedied through insulation measures such as double glazing and ceiling insulation to bedrooms. Yes this is a cost - but again the noise levels are not as bas as those adjacent to the airport.

We love this leafy rivereside suburb. Coming home is always like walking into aa familiar friends arms and there is no noise to bother much. Aircraft maybe, but the only one that might be seen as slightly loud is the ten thirty pm A380 and I dont mind. It is hardly heard and I often go outside to say safe journey to the aircraft and admire the long sleek wings and all of that glorious technology pulling 400 people and their luggage up and around. Within seconds she has disappeared above clouds or away into the high night sky. On a clear night the pilot sometimes puts on a light show by flickering all the lights up and down the wings and tail. This is a lovely place and as for buying here? We have often been called the hidden gem, and properties are about to skyrocket here in price especially now the mining industry is about to be revitalised, make no mistake. We are 10 minutes from the city, 15 to 20 from Fremantle and 20 minutes from the airport. Many families live here and we all love the sound of family life around us. Parks are beautiful and kept like that by an on the ball council. All in all worth investing in.

Really?? Thanks for the aircraft comment. We may be moving to WA outerskirts of Perth CBD and my hubby like this suburb as some of his workmates love there. I actually was told there was a curfew on flights after midnight?? but obviously there isn't. Now this is making me think twice about this suburb. I really need a safe, community feel, family friendly, good schools, parks etc kinds suburb....doing my reasearch online but without physically seeing these for real I need local feedback on what suburbs to look at....Was thinking Victoria Park, Como, Rockingham, Lathlain????????????? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

@elijah2905: I have lived in Como for almost two years and have not experienced any aircraft noise (only once in a blue moon), so I find it very hard to believe johnb's review. Perhaps aircraft noise is only a problem for the lower part of Como (around Manning) because, as far as I'm aware, it's not a problem in the greater part of Como, which is a quiet and peaceful place on the whole.

I am a light sleeper and occasionally the aircraft noise does wake me up - mainly at 1 and 2 am in the morning. That said, the neighbour's rusty whirlybird affects me more. Like anything though, you get used to it. I would definitely prefer Como over Lathlain, Vic Park and Rockingham! But you will pay more too to live in Como. I want a bigger house with yard but think that what I want is not really available in Como unless you go East Como which doesn't really have the same feel as West of Canning Highway. The schools are great, easy access into the CBD, as well as heading East or West, North or South. Its a good central location with some great amenities. The City of South Perth needs a bit of a kick up the bum to provide a swimming pool. Its on the cards I hear.

Perth is small and you can hear airplane noises in a lot of suburb ... but Como is very far from the airport and impact should be minimal...

Plenty of Aircraft noise which is disappointing. I agree with john. Really is one of the let downs of the area unfortunately. The fly right over and bad In the morning.

All of central Perth seems to be effected to one degree or other, even Nedlands, Claremont, Fremantle. The planes are really noticeable in Salter Point and Mount Pleasant, as they often fly directly over the Canning River at night but at least the newer ones climb so steeply they are typically much higher by the time they are over the Swan.
