"Some great, some not-so-great streets. Excellent train link to airport and city. Not much to do!"
The area to go for is Cairns, Eldon and Hardwicke Streets. Long leafy avenues, great sized blocks. Avoid north of the station and west of Belmore Rd. At around 700k for the above streets, you're paying silly money for a nice bungalow on an okay street in a basically bogan, terminally boring, not so safe at night suburb. You're kids will hate you when they reach their teens for buying a house so far from a beach or any good scenic walking areas. And for buying a house in a suburb that is just a little too dodgy to walk around after 11pm. Too many cars full of bored 17-22 year olds driving around looking for someone to harass or intimidate. So many much nicer suburbs in Sydney you could bring your family up in for this money. I guess the only positive is that your house will hold its value - prices are hovering around 2009 levels, don't think they'll go down in the good streets.
