West Ryde

"Underrated neighborhood with easy access to everything"

I've lived in West Ryde for almost 10 years now, in three different locations: Clarke street, in the northeast, Moira avenue in the west, and now Union street in the south of the suburb. One thing was uniform about all locations: the neighbours are friendly, noise levels at night are low, and the suburb feels safe (for the most part).

All parts of West Ryde are well serviced by public transport, in fact so well that they should consider cancelling a few bus services because they rarely have passengers outside of peak hours. If you live in the southern part of west ryde you are also within walking distance of meadowbank ferry.

For the health nut there is meadowbank park, which is nice for walking the dog or going for the morning run/jog. There are also numerous cycleways going to the city, western suburbs, and olympic park/botany bay.

For the shopper there are many options - Rhodes, Top Ryde, Parramatta, Macquarie, West Ryde to name a few. Unfortunately there are far too many Woolworths in the area and they collude to keep prices high - especially in west ryde where even the butcher sets his prices to match woolies, and woolies stopped a greengrocer from setting up in the centre so you have to put up with sub-par veges from the supermarket. For groceries, Rhodes is the best bet as the coles is marginally cheaper and the butcher/greengrocer are way cheaper (and have better quality produce). Parramatta is also a good option for similar reasons.

Unfortunately West Ryde is a haven for rat runners (people who go through the back streets to avoid congestion on Victoria road) - this makes the back streets (constitution road, parkes street, ryedale road) clogged and unsafe at times because a lot of the drivers are impatient and do not stop for lights/crosswalks.

Also West Ryde is a category 3/4 with insurers, which means that the rates are a bit high because of the number of claims made in the area for home/car insurance. The suburb does feel safe but there is some crime. After all the suburb surrounds a major artery and is only 18km from the CBD, so things will happen.

News is that the NSW (labor socialist) government is setting up some public housing in the area directly around west ryde station and also darvall road in the west of the suburb - avoid buying in these areas, they will go down.
