Tumut

"A beautiful town ruined by small town mentality."

We absolutely loved our time living in Tumut from a scenary perspective. The river walk is beautiful and the surrounding region is just spectacular.

We loved many things about the physicality of the town and we were truly sad to leave from that perspective. Employment is hard to come by unless you have connections and the locals are friendly enough if your passing through but like to keep you at arms length if you move to town and expect to work.

I had secured a job as a qualified professional before moving to the town and we didn’t end up staying more than a year. We have a young child and thought that would help us along in making friends but nothing sincere or genuine eventuated. I think the exception could be if you started a business and employed the locals, there would be a trade off there but even then I really think it would be very surface level.

We did our best to fit in and despite these efforts, came to realise that unless you have some claim to the area from a genealogy perspective, your very much an annoying outsider driving up their property prices and stealing jobs from the locals and their next gen.

Not everyone was like this but enough were so we made the decision that we didn’t intend on spending our lives been made to feel like we didn’t belong as no amount of effort would help. Certain family names carry allot of clout in the town, when they honestly shouldn’t.

We couldn’t speak highly enough of the Beauty of the region and will pass through to Selwyn like everyone else during ski season and leave the small town politics, egos and hurtful gossip in our rearview mirror.
