Tumut

"Treechangers can do much better."

Tumut is a deceptive town. You'll first notice how pretty it is. It's one of those places that actually has 4 distinct seasons, 45 in Summer, sub zero in Winter. Everybody smiles and says Hi, but as you've read elsewhere, that is as far as it goes. Unless your Grandparents are in the local cemetery you will never, ever be a local. This will pass on to your children even if they were born here. Your kids, by the way, will have very limited options for education, enjoyment and company. There is a stark divide across the town between the haves and the have nots, due in large part to the heavy industry that the town welcomed in some years ago. This same heavy industry casts a stinky, chemical soup over the town in stark contrast to the pretty rural landscape. Yes, Tumut really does stink. It's little wonder that asthma diagnoses in Tumut are skyrocketing, particularly among the over 40's. We have chosen not to raise our children in this hellish backwater, and cannot wait to be gone.

I've been drawn back to this site jvd after writing a comment years ago & gorgeous Lisa replying recently. As a result I've been given the opportunity to read more comments about Tumut. Everything you say is true about Tumut. The stench coming from the paper & timber mills was toxic. 3 years was far too long for me & I still reflect back on that time with sadness and anxiety. The day I left...when I reached the 80 km sign on the road to Gundagai the relief was intense. That was 4 years ago now and I refuse to return. My neighbours at the time left Tumut not long after as they did not want their young children being schooled in Tumut.
